The World's Toughest Rowing Race

Follow the boys' progress at www.atlanticrowingrace09.com

Welcome to the Atlantic Row 2009 website, home of Oliver Back and James Croome's project to row the 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean as part of the 2009 Woodvale Atlantic Rowing Race.

For James & Olli this project is about a lot more than just the physical and mental challenge of rowing across an ocean for 2 months. By the time they set sail this adventure will have been two and a half years in the making, and whilst they're sure there will be trials and tribulations along the way, when push comes to shove, they already know they'll do all in their power to get each other to the start line.

The actual row itself is merely the final stage of this adventure, that is not to belittle its scale, but before the boys can even get a boat into the water they must first raise an estimated £64,000 to pay for all the costs involved in the race, including shipping, food, insurance, equipment, and, of course, the all important boat. Not only must they raise this somewhat daunting sum of money, they must also obtain their RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Shorebased, RYA Basic Sea Survival, RYA Marine Radio Short Range Certificate Course and First Aid at Sea qualifications, partake in a qualifying event, and spend countless early mornings and late nights racking up the hours in the gym and on the water honing their technique and building up their stamina.

On a more serious note, aside from the appeal of the challenge itself, the boys are also heavily committed to using the race as a means by which to raise support, money and awareness for two charities that are very dear to their hearts, the Multiple Sclerosis Society and East Anglia's Children's Hospices (EACH). Please take a moment to read the "Our Charities" page and follow the links to these very important organisations.
